Institute for Nouthetic Studies (INS)

“I myself am convinced about you, my brothers, that you yourselves are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge, and competent to counsel one another.” (Romans 15:14)

Dr. Jay E. AdamsIn 1970, Dr. Jay E. Adams confronted the evangelical Christian church over their failure to counsel each other through Scripture, as seen with the Apostle Paul in Romans 15, and instead refer hurting people in their churches to secular counseling practitioners. His book, Competent to Counsel, lit a fire that continues to burn in the hearts of pastors and other Christian workers around the world. Today, there is a growing understanding that we have a complete and sufficient resource in the Word of God to meet the counseling needs of God’s people.

For over 50 years, Dr. Adams has been demonstrating, through his books and lectures, how pastors can effectively apply God’s Word in the counseling room. He formed the Institute for Nouthetic Studies (INS) to serve as a vehicle through which he could minister to the Christian leaders who sought his help for training in biblical counseling.

To ensure that his teaching ministry would remain in the hands of faithful people after his death, he entrusted the INS ministry to Mid-America which is committed to maintaining his legacy of faithfulness to the Scriptures and confidence in their sufficiency. Mid-America also offers degrees and certificates for anyone interested in serving as a biblical counselor. Students can receive a BA, MA, MDIV, DMIN, and PhD in biblical counseling. The BA, MA, and MDIV degrees may be earned residentially or online. If students do not seek an accredited degree, they can take INS courses which are available online at nouthetic.org and earn an INS Certificate in Nouthetic Counseling from Mid-America.

Also, the Institute for Nouthetic Studies Bridge Program (INSBP) at Mid-America awards students who have completed Institute for Nouthetic Studies certification up to 15 hours of credit at the Master level, and up to six hours of credit at the Bachelor level toward a Master of Art, Master of Divinity, or Bachelor of Art degree in Biblical Counseling from Mid-America.

Looking for excellent biblical counseling resources you know you can trust? Check out the INS Bookstore which includes a large number of Dr. Jay E. Adams' books, such as Competent to Counsel and the newly republished Christian Counselor's New Testament.
