What Classes Will I Take?
The course requirements vary for each theology degree, but here is a sampling of some of the foundational classes you will take with many degrees:
Old Testament Survey
Most theology degrees include Old Testament survey classes that connect the overarching teachings contained in the Old Testament. By studying every book—from Genesis to Malachi—you will gain a greater understanding of God’s revelation to mankind given approximately between 1400 B.C. to 400 B.C. Studying the Old Testament draws out the nature of God, His covenants, His promise and prophecies concerning the coming Messiah.
History of Christianity
Church history teaches about the rise of the church from Christ’s commission, to the book of Acts and onward. This subject is vital today because it shows that every generation of the church has been attacked by heresies and false doctrines, but it also proves that Christ’s truth lives on. From the denial of Christ’s deity, to the rejection of His human nature and sinlessness, churches throughout the ages have battled for truth. By studying the history of Christianity, you will be able to identify the major biblical doctrines that united the church then and now. You will also gain strength and perspective from the arguments that church figures have used throughout the centuries to defend our Christian beliefs.
In a world where time is short and eternity is long, developing a process for personal evangelism is of the utmost necessity. Knowing and experiencing the Gospel is only the beginning of the Christian journey. God has commissioned us to proclaim His glory, share His message, and apply His love and grace to the lives around you. You will become motivated and equipped to find your own voice and carry out the Great Commission of making disciples among the nations.
Spiritual formation seeks to produce Christian leaders who are equipped to shepherd, encourage, counsel, teach the Word of God, and show selfless love of others. Since one of the primary roles of the minister is to help every believer mature in Christ’s likeness, it is important to learn the fundamental Christian activities that help grow the believer. These nurturing gifts include faith, prayer, Bible devotions, fellowship, and spiritual leadership.
Introduction to Reading and Writing
Throughout church history, the greatest preachers have been those who can communicate clearly, boldly, and effectively. What better way to craft these skills than through disciplined reading and writing? In this first-year introduction, you’ll discuss these prolific communicators and study the techniques they used to powerfully proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ to their generation. You’ll also learn how to find your voice and use it to minster the Word of God to the audiences God has given you. This foundational course will help you succeed as you earn any theology degree.
New Testament Survey
Another foundational study in working towards your theology degree is New Testament Survey. You will delve deep into every sacred book from Matthew to Revelation. You will gain a greater understanding of God’s revelation to mankind gifted approximately A.D. 44 through A.D. 96. By studying the New Testament, you will examine the atoning work of Christ and how His love reveals the nature of God. You will also review the rise and development of the Christian church and the doctrines that pertain to Christian living. A deep understanding of the life of Christ, the Gospel, and the fruit it produces is the essential foundation for any preacher.
Systematic theology answers the question, “What does the whole Bible say about any given topic?” Throughout history, people have developed entire doctrines from small sections of Scripture not viewed within the context of the passage or overall context of Scripture. By learning to use the entire Bible as a framework for doctrine, you will have a greater discernment for truth. The doctrines you will develop include Bibliology (Bible), Theology Proper (God the Father), Christology (God the Son), Pneumatology (God the Holy Spirit), Anthropology (man), Hamartiology (sin), Soteriology (salvation), Ecclesiology (church), and Eschatology (end times).
Introduction to Biblical Counseling
This course equips the minister with a biblical understanding of how to help people change and grow for the glory of God. You will become competent to counsel others and help them address and alleviate the weight of personal sin and/or suffering. Studying the authority, sufficiency, compassion, clarity, and necessity of Scripture, you will learn how to lead people to forgiveness and grow in an image of Christ.
