“Don’t defer and refer when people have counseling needs. You can be competent to counsel!” —Dr. Jay E. Adams
Biblical counseling is one of the fastest growing areas of ministry in churches and Christian organizations across the nation. The needs are immense and rapidly growing in today’s world. Pastors and staff are striving to meet the ever-increasing demands for counseling in their church and community. Other Christian ministries are also seeking well equipped, biblically trained counselors to provide true hope and genuine answers from the Word of God.
Mid-America is uniquely positioned to meet this need and is at the forefront of the biblical counseling movement. Our program combines the strengths of Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary and the Institute for Nouthetic Studies (INS) in training men and women to counsel biblically.
Mid-America, a SACSCOC-accredited institution, has partnered with Dr. Jay E. Adams, INS founder and the father of the modern biblical counseling movement, to build a counseling curriculum that is faithful to the Scriptures, academically rigorous, and intensely practical. Beginning with his landmark book Competent to Counsel in 1970, Dr. Adams has been demonstrating the importance of counseling with the conviction that the Scripture is God’s sufficient resource for dealing with life’s problems.
By combining two institutions with a strong history of teaching the sufficiency of Scripture, we have created one of the nation’s most comprehensive and accessible educational programs for training men and women to counsel biblically. Our biblical counseling program offers students fully accredited training in biblical counseling at every level:
The BA, MA, and MDIV degrees may be earned both residentially through Mid-America or via our online degree program.
In addition, students can take INS courses which are available online at nouthetic.org. These courses offer students two additional options:
From INS Certificate to PHD, Mid-America offers seven levels of biblical counseling training, proving you access to becoming thoroughly equipped and competent to counsel at any stage of ministry.
Building on nearly a half century commitment to the sufficiency of Scripture, Mid-America has bolstered its position as the premier training center for biblical counseling by joining forces with the Institute for Nouthetic Studies (INS). MABTS President, Dr. Spradlin comments, “I am blessed and thrilled that MABTS and INS can minister together to strengthen the Lord’s call to train ministers of the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. The Word of God is sufficient; our ministries will continue to stand on the Word and Its power.”
Likewise, INS Founder Dr. Jay E. Adams, Donn Arms, and the ministry of INS are at the forefront of a movement calling pastors and other Christian workers back to the Scriptures in their counseling ministry. Beginning with the publication of his book Competent to Counsel in 1970, Dr. Adams has been demonstrating the importance of understanding the sufficiency of the Word to bring about the kind of change that pleases God and genuinely helps the counselee. Both institutions, therefore, provide a solid foundation to stand upon the sufficiency of God’s Word in ministry and in giving Christ the preeminence in all things.
