3.7.4 Academic Freedom

The institution ensures adequate procedures for safeguarding and protecting academic freedom.

_X_  Compliance           ___  Partial Compliance          ___  Non-Compliance

Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary (MABTS) defines academic freedom as the freedom “to believe, teach, and write for publication as their consciences dictate. Each professor shall have the freedom to discuss and write about the subject in which he/she has competence without harassment or fear of dismissal” [1]. The institution has approved and published an Academic Freedom and Professional Security policy which demonstrates the fundamental principles of academic freedom at the school [2], and has published the policy in the 2014-15 Student Supplement and Housing Handbook [3]. Academic freedom at the institution is understood within the context of the Articles of Belief [4]. There is a grievance procedure for faculty [5] and students [6] if they are concerned that academic freedom is breached. There have been no grievances filed by students or faculty concerning academic freedom.
