Dr. John Mark Terry

Professor Emeritus of Missions


Dr. Mark Terry was born in Siloam Springs, Arkansas, and grew up in a pastor's home. He professed faith in Christ at age nine during a summer revival at the First Baptist Church of Lockhart, Texas, where his father was the pastor. He attended John Brown University in Arkansas, where he met Barbara Whittle. They  married in 1971. During his college days Dr. Terry felt God's call to serve in foreign missions. In order to qualify for appointment as a foreign missionary, he enrolled in Southwestern Baptist Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. In April, 1975, Dr. Terry and his wife were appointed for missionary service. They served for 14 years at the Southern Phillippines Baptist Seminary. He earned his PhD in missions at Southwestern Seminary, studying during two furloughs from the mission field.


In 1989 Dr. and Mrs. Terry resigned from the Foreign Mission Board, and Dr. terry taught missions and served as the Academic Dean at Clear Creek Baptist Bible College in Kentucky. In 1993 he was appointed to the faculty of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, where he taught evangelism and missions and served as the Associate Dean of the Billy Graham School of Missions and Evangelism. In 2005 Dr. and Mrs. Terry returned to missionary service, serving at a seminary in Southeast Asia, under appointment by the International Mission Board. When the Terrys retired from missionary service, Dr. Terry was elected to the faculty at Mid-America in 2014.


A noted author, Dr. Terry has authored or edited these books: Evangelism: A Concise History (Broadman), Church Evangelism (Broadman), Missiology: An Introduction (Broadman), St. Paul's Missionary Methods (InterVarsity), Developing a Strategy for Missions (Baker), and Encountering the History of Missions (Baker).


The Terrys have two grown children and four grandchildren. Dr. Terry enjoys reading mystery novels, eating barbecue, and watching University of Kentucky basketball.
